Lindsay Lohan has been told by a judge that if she accepts a plea deal on charges of stealing a necklace, she will go to jail.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Keith Schwartz told the Mean Girls actress he would sentence her to jail if she pleaded guilty or no contest to a charge filed after a jewellery store reported at 2,500 dollar necklace missing.
The judge said if Lindsay doesn’t accept a plea deal, the case will go to a preliminary hearing when prosecutors will lay out evidence against the star.
The 24-year-old said she understood his comments.
She is due back in court on March 10, when the case will either be resolved or set for another hearing.
Details of the plea deal offered by prosecutors haven’t been revealed.
The necklace case has become the latest courthouse issue for Lindsay, who was sent to jail twice and rehab twice last year for violating her probation.
She spent three months in rehab at the Betty Ford Centre and was accused by a rehab worker there of misdemeanour battery during a December argument. Prosecutors in Riverside County have not yet decided whether to pursue charges in that case.
Roughly three weeks after her release, she was accused of taking the necklace from Kamofie & Co., a jewellery store near Lindsay’s new home in Venice. The necklace was turned over to detectives before they could serve a warrant to search her home.
Lindsay’s attorney, Shawn Holley, has denied the actress stole the necklace and said she has passed all drug testing.
