Authorities in Mexico are investigating the circumstances around a meeting between actor Sean Penn and drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, according to a Government spokesman.
Guzman was on the run after a prison escape when he gave an interview to the Hollywood star in October.
It is believed the meeting was set up by the actress Kate del Castillo.
However, the actors themselves are not thought to be the subjects of any criminal proceedings, with the Mexican Attorney General’s Office saying that it “investigates actions”, “not people”.
Sean Penn has declared he has “nothing to hide”.
