Newlywed accused 'linked to murder'

Shrien Dewani was released from Wandsworth Prison after his family came up with £250,000 security

Police in South Africa are investigating a possible link between the British newlywed accused of hiring a hitman to kill his bride and another murder three years ago, the national commissioner said.

Wealthy businessman Shrien Dewani, 30, was released from Wandsworth Prison on bail after his family came up with £250,000 security.

Dewani is wanted by South African police for conspiracy to murder his new wife Anni, 28.

National Commissioner General Bheki Cele told reporters police are investigating a link between Dewani and the 2007 murder of Dr Pox Raghavjee.

Media reports suggested the Eastern Cape doctor’s widow knew Dewani and drove to Cape town to comfort him on the death of his wife.

Publicist Max Clifford, who is representing Dewani, dismissed the new claims, saying: “It’s a great story but it’s a total fabrication.

“How flimsy and ridiculous this whole thing is. If it wasn’t so tragic it would be a farce, a comedy.

“Anni’s father and Shrien’s own father were both there with him after the murder. I’m sure a woman turning up to comfort him would not have been much appreciated and would have been mentioned by Anni’s father.”

The commissioner has previously been criticised for describing Dewani as a “monkey”.

His spokeswoman said: “The investigation is ongoing even if it means linking Mr Dewani to other cases.”
