US stocks have ended the day mixed after President Barack Obama said he was willing to compromise with Republicans on extending Bush-era tax cuts.
In a speech, Obama said he was willing cede ground to help lawmakers reach an agreement that would extend the tax cuts along with unemployment benefits.
According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 20, or 0.2%, at 11,362. The S&P 500 index is down 1, or 0.1%, at 1,223.
The Nasdaq composite index is up 3, or 0.1%t, at 2,594.
Rising shares and falling ones were almost evenly matched on the New York Stock Exchange. Trading volume was 804 million shares.
