It won’t be such a jolly holiday for Mary Poppins star Dick Van Dyke.
The 84-year-old stage and screen veteran was forced to pull out of his new career-retrospective musical Dick Van Dyke – Step in Time! – A Musical Memoir, after just one performance at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood, Los Angeles.
The theatre’s publicist Allison Rawlings said the Emmy and Tony-winning actor had been nursing an Achilles injury for several weeks and after Wednesday night’s performance he realised he would be unable to continue with the show’s month-long run.
Ms Rawlings said there were no plans to reschedule the show, which reviewed Van Dyke’s half-century career.
“I don’t know how it happened because I never had a career plan,” Van Dyke, who is 85 on Monday, mused in an earlier interview.
“I had kids. And I had to work. And everything just worked out so I not only had a comfortable living, I enjoyed every minute of it – and still am. This is my retirement.”
