Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican says.
The 71-year-old pontiff has successfully undergone surgery spending three hours in the operating room, with doctors confirming a form of lung cancer during the procedure. The doctors had little knowledge about the diagnosis before the operation, but now have confirmation.
The Vatican says the surgery was successful and there were no complications and he had a peaceful night in the hospital following his surgery on Tuesday, the Vatican’s press office said early Wednesday. He is now resting and is expected to make a very swift recovery, given his age, strength, and good health.
