Two US hospitals have said they have developed a rapid test for the Zika virus, which can produce results within hours.
It is mostly spread by mosquitoes – and has been linked to thousands of cases of birth defects in South America.
Pathologist Dr James Versalovich from Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston has said it is important to get quick results: “With this rapid test we can detect the virus, directly in blood and in other body fluids.
“And we can reassure pregnant women who may have exposed due to recent travel or may have symptoms also.”
