The Rev Jesse L Jackson, a protege of Martin Luther King Jr and a two-time US presidential candidate who led the civil rights movement for decades after Dr King’s assassination, has died aged 84.
Rev Jackson died on Tuesday at home and surrounded by family, his daughter, Santita Jackson, said. Rev. Jesse Jackson died early Tuesday after battling the neurodegenerative disorder Progressive Supranuclear Palsy.
Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr was a monumental figure in the American civil rights movement and a lifelong champion of justice, equality, and Black political empowerment.
His voice shaped generations of leaders and inspired countless Americans to believe change is possible. He was a civil rights icon, founder of Rainbow/PUSH that channelled black pride and self determination in several corporate boardrooms pressuring executives for more equitable society.
