Royals at Christmas church service

Must read

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh have attended a Christmas church service at Sandringham

Members of the Royal Family have attended the traditional Christmas Day church service at Sandringham.

Onlookers watched as royals including the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived for the annual service at St Mary Magdalene Church on the royal estate in Norfolk.

The royals gathered at Sandringham earlier this week to begin their Christmas celebrations.

Prince William is not there because he is on duty with the RAF in north Wales and his fiancee Kate Middleton is spending Christmas with her immediate family.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry, the Duke of York and his daughters Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex were among family members who joined the Queen at the service, led by Sandringham rector Jonathan Riviere.

Police estimated that more than 1,000 people gathered outside the church to watch royals arrive.

Most of the party – including the Duke of Edinburgh – walked the quarter of a mile from Sandringham House to the church.
