Parts of western Hungary and the capital, Budapest, have been shaken by an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale, rescue officials said.

The tremor is the strongest in the country since 1985.

The National Disaster Management Agency said no injuries had been reported.

Buildings are understood to have suffered minor damage, including small cracks and falling plasterwork.

The mayor’s office said bridges and underpasses would be inspected to ensure their safety.

The quake was centred near the town of Oroszlany, 44 miles west of Budapest.
