Hathaway has kept her baby bump under wraps (literally) for months.
But after being spotted by photographers in a bikini on the beach, the Oscar-winning actress took matters into her own hands and announced her pregnancy on Instagram with a picture she admitted “was a little out of character”.
She explained her decision to release the picture of herself, posing in a red bikini with her hands cradling her growing bump, in the caption.
“Happy 2016 to my beautiful Instafriends! So, posting a bikini pic is a little out of character for me, but just now while I was at the beach I noticed I was being photographed.
“I figure if this kind of photo is going to be out in the world it should at least be an image that makes me happy (and be one that was taken with my consent. And with a filter :)”
She finished the post: “Wishing you love, light and blessings for the year ahead! Annie.”
This will be the first child for Anne, 33, and husband Adam Shulman, 34, who married in 2012.
The Interstellar star is notoriously private and had kept quiet about rumours even while paparazzi shots of her burgeoning bump did the rounds.
Her 1.8 million followers seemed delighted to accept the news directly from Anne on the social media site, wishing her good luck with the birth and predicting she’d make a wonderful mother.
