Syrian military army have retaken the city of Palmyra from so called Islamic State, IS. The Syrian army is now in full control of this ancient city of Palmyra and it’s residential neighborhoods.
This is a significant milestone for the government of Syria and it has been a very difficult journey since Palmyra fell to the hands of IS last year. The entire monuments and temples were destroyed and major antiquities stolen.

According to a statement read by the military command on Syrian state television, the recapture of Palmyra marks the beginning of the collapse of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL). The retake of Palmyra lasted 3 days with the help of the Russian airstrikes.

A commander of the Desert Falcons unit of the Syrian army told RT that the “military operation to retake Palmyra lasted three days,” adding that the “main difficulty was that there were a lot of mines along the roads.”
