The United States has held talks with democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi about US assistance to Burma, which is currently restricted because of sanctions.
A US State Department official said the US Embassy was also engaging with Burma authorities and other stakeholders on the issue “to consider important perspectives in formulating US government policies”.
Ms Suu Kyi has recently endorsed retaining international sanctions against Burma, which angered the ruling military.
However, her party also called for discussions with the United States and other nations about when and how sanctions might be modified.
