Passengers have set a fire to a South African commuter train over a fare dispute, causing damage estimated at 1.7 million dollars (£1.1 million).

Metrorail spokeswoman Lillian Mofokeng said commuters started the fire after they were caught without valid tickets.

No one was hurt and Metrorail authorities evacuated all the passengers.

The train was running between Johannesburg and the capital of Pretoria.

The economic hub of Johannesburg has poor and unsafe transport infrastructure.

Ahead of the World Cup last year, the government launched a bus system but its routes are limited.
