Athens transport unions are staging a new strike against planned public sector reforms, leading to queues on the Greek capital’s streets as commuters instead travelled to work by car or taxi.
Bus and trolley bus workers are holding a two-day strike, while metro employees defied a court order to walk off the job.
The walkouts came as new ticket increases of up to 80% kicked in on Tuesday.
Unions plan further strikes later in the week to protest against a planned restructuring of loss-making public transport companies that will lead to pay cuts and involuntary staff transfers.
They have held a string of strikes over the past two months.
Greece avoided bankruptcy last year through a 110 billion euro (£94 billion) international rescue loan package. In return, the socialist government took unpopular austerity measures.
