Two demonstrators have died in protests over rising food prices which have swept Algerian cities, the country’s Interior Minister said.

Dahou Ould Kablia said at least 300 police officers have been injured since Wednesday when the unrest started, along with 100 protesters.

One demonstrator died in rioting near M’Sila, a city 215 miles (350km) south-east of the capital, Algiers, and the other died in Bousmail, a western suburb of Algiers. The ministry did not provide further details.

The Arab-language newspaper El Khabar reported that an 18-year-old was shot dead when police fired to disperse rioters near M’Sila.
