Two US Air Force personnel have died after shots were fired at a bus carrying US military staff at Frankfurt airport.
An airport spokesman said the shooting “near or on” the bus took place in front of Terminal 2 at continental Europe’s second-biggest airport hub. He added that the bus driver and a passenger were killed, and two people suffered serious wounds and another light injuries.
US Air Force Europe spokeswoman Major Beverley Mock confirmed that all four victims were airmen. She added that German police have arrested a suspect over the shooting and she could not release any further details on the victims until their next of kin have been notified.
The two men killed were said to have been based in Britain.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said her sympathies were with the victims and their families, and pledged that Germany would do everything in its power to investigate the crime. “It is a terrible event,” she said.
Kosovo Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi said the gunman was Arif Uka, a Kosovo citizen from the northern town of Mitrovica. He said: “This is a devastating and a tragic event. We are trying to find out was this something that was organised or what was the nature of the attack.”
The US military has several major bases in the Frankfurt region, often used as a logistical hub for operations in Afghanistan or Iraq.
