Apple intends to source 100 percent of the materials used in the manufacturing of its devices from recycled materials as opposed to mining new materials, as revealed in the company’s Environmental Responsibility Report covering the 2016 fiscal year.
The company has already begun developing the resources needed to achieve a 100 percent rating and invented a robot named Liam capable of quickly dissembling an iPhone 6 and sorting its components for recycling.
Liam can currently dismantle 2.4 million phones a year, so it may be some time before Apple can reach its goal of a 100 percent ‘closed-loop supply chain’.
