A bishop has blessed a fleet of council gritters in a bid to cut road crashes in the extreme wintry weather.

The Bishop of Lincoln, the Right Reverend Dr John Saxbee, has carried out blessings at the Sturton-by-Stow depot every year since 2003 but had to cancel this year’s original date of December 7 so salt runs were not interrupted.

Bishop Saxbee was finally able to go ahead with the ceremonies, which will be his last before his retirement in January.

Church leaders also simultaneously read prayers and met staff at other depots across the county.

David Davies, principal maintenance engineer for Lincolnshire County Council, said the gritter blessings provided an “important morale boost” for the drivers who were working in very dangerous circumstances.

He added: “The gritter blessings play an important role in highlighting the need for motorists to take extreme care and the brave work carried out by our gritting teams.”
