Spanish police have arrested a British man whose brother-in-law was found dead in Barcelona.

David Keith Brennan is being held by authorities in the city after Stephen Storey’s death. According to reports, the two men were brothers-in-law.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Barcelona on February 4. We have notified next of kin and are providing consular assistance.

“We can confirm the arrest of a British national and we are also providing consular assistance. Consular officials in Barcelona are in touch with police and local authorities about the case.”

Local police said they were called to a hotel where two men were having a fight in one of the rooms.

Mr Storey, 47, died of his injuries, a spokeswoman said.

Brennan, 49, was initially arrested on suspicion of murder but detectives are still investigating the incident and are now questioning him “in connection with the death” as they have not yet established whether Mr Storey was murdered.

The spokeswoman for the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalonian force, said: “The Mossos d’Esquadra have arrested David KB, 49.

“At 2am the force received a call about a fight that had broken out between two relatives in a hotel room. As a result of the fight one of the men, a 47-year-old, died. The cause of his death is under investigation.”

Brennan is expected to appear in court on Saturday, when a judge will decide whether to charge him, she added.
