Clooney's Italian murder mystery

Must read

George Clooney will play a thriller writer in a new murder mystery

George Clooney is to star in an Italian murder mystery based on a true story.

The Hollywood heartthrob will play Douglas Preston, who wrote the non-fiction bestseller The Monster of Florence with Italian crime reporter Mario Spezi, in Fox’s film adaptation of the book, Deadline reports.

Douglas is a thriller writer who met Mario after moving to Italy and together they managed to solve a 30-year old serial murder case in which seven couples were savagely murdered between 1974 and 1985 while sitting in cars parked just outside Florence.

The case had gone cold and the suspects had been let go when Douglas moved into a nearby farmhouse and began asking questions.

The authorities did not welcome the writer’s curiosity, jailing Mario and interrogating Douglas, but the two sleuths eventually solved the crime.

Fox bought the rights to the book with a view for George to star.

The project will mean George can spend more time in Italy filming on location. He has a villa in the country and has been spending an increasing amount of time there since he began dating Italian actress and model Elisabetta Canalis in 2009.
