Protesters have gathered in central Istanbul to voice anger after a young nurse was attacked on a bus by a man for wearing shorts.
Many demonstrators donned shorts and chanted “don’t interfere with my shorts” in a show of support for Aysegul Terzi, 23, who was allegedly kicked in the face by Abdullah Cakiroglu in Istanbul on September 12.
Cakiroglu confessed to attacking Ms Terzi for what he called her “inappropriate” clothing, but he was released from custody despite expressing no remorse, according to Turkish news reports.
He was then re-arrested on charges of inciting hatred and interfering with the right to freedom, following public outrage.
On social media, critics accused the Turkish authorities of expressing tacit approval of Cakiroglu’s actions.
A similar shorts protest is scheduled to take place in the capital, Ankara.
