England fans outraged by NFL logo on Wembley pitch during Euro 2016 qualifier

Must read

As England settled into another Euro 2016 qualifier against Estonia, there was much for fans to get irate about with lacklustre skills and the paint-drying pace of play. The fact England have been unbeaten on this campaign meant little.

Five days ago the New York Jets beat the Miami Dolphins 27-14 at the home of English soccer. Sorry, football.
On the day, the logo looked like this.

But there was something else for patriotic football fans to go apoplectic over. The logo of the National Football League was still clearly visible in the Wembley pitch. Yep, the NFL… that’s AMERICAN “football”.

Awkwardly, that same logo, in outline at least, was still there by Friday.

Not everyone was content blaming the poor turf keepers though. They wanted this complaint taken right to the top. People were really struggling with the symbolism of the thing. And suddenly it didn’t matter whether England beat Estonia or not.

There was a financial argument for the NFL being at Wembley in the first place. People had some very divergent views on whether this should be allowed.

Although people reckoned there were some similarities between the two sporting occasions. And actually a lot of people were just glad to have something of interest happen at all.

Of course it could have been worse. Just look at what soccer teams in America have to put up with when it comes to NFL markings on their pitch.
