Colin Firth arrives back from Los Angeles following his Oscar triumph on Sunday

Oscar winner Colin Firth has returned home, days after being crowned king of Hollywood.

The star and his Italian wife, Livia Giuggioli, arrived at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 5 on Wednesday.

The King’s Speech took four awards at Sunday’s Academy Awards, including best actor for Firth.

The relatively low-budget British film, about King George VI’s attempt to overcome his stutter, also won best picture, best director and best original screenplay.

Accepting his award, Firth threatened to dance with joy and thanked Ms Giuggioli who he admitted had put up with his “fleeting delusions of royalty”.

He told the audience at the 83rd Academy Awards: “I have a feeling my career has just peaked.”

The 50-year-old actor, who missed out on the Oscar he was nominated for last year for A Single Man, thanked his British fans, paying tribute to “all the people who have been rooting for me back home”.
