Girl's body found near hospital

A four-year-old girl was found dead at the rear of Raigmore Hospital in Inverness

The body of a young girl has been discovered near a hospital.

The four-year-old’s body was found in the early hours of Wednesday at the rear of Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, said Northern Constabulary.

Police are treating the death as suspicious.

The discovery followed the launch of a major search which began after a woman and child were reported missing at about 10pm on Tuesday.

Detectives said they are following a positive line of inquiry in connection with the death.

They have urged anyone who saw a woman walking with a small girl near the hospital, between 7pm on Tuesday and the early hours of Wednesday morning, to get in touch.

Police said the woman and child had been in the hospital but were not patients.

Officers have also appealed for sightings of the woman, who was wearing a boiler suit, between Raigmore Hospital and the village of Balloch between 7pm on Tuesday and 3am on Wednesday.

It is understood the girl’s body was found shortly after 3am.

Police and forensic scientists are examining the scene in the grounds at the back of the hospital. The area has been cordoned off and will remain that way until the examination is finished, the force said.
