Liz Truss MP – 81,326 votes
Rishi Sunak MP – 60,399 votes
Liz Truss who was a Remain supporter has become the favourite of the Brexit-backing Conservative members. She was a former Liberal Democrat activist, who marched against the then Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s but now is a full fledged “Thatcherite”
The Tory Leadership race lacked lustre as the majority of the Conservative members still preferred the popular Boris Johnson to remain as the Party Leader and PM.
Rishi Sunak’s leadership campaign was marred from day one as it was believed that he stabbed Boris Johnson at the back with the Partygate scandal causing a raft of cabinet resignations which ultimately led to Mr Johnson’s resignation as the PM.
Prior to this race she was the Foreign Secretary in Mr Johnson’s government and was his ally. She also remained loyal to Boris Johnson during the witch-hunt “Partygate” scandal. She stood by him until the bitter end winning the huge support of Johnson loyalists which consequently paid off.
She won the grassroots Tory members as they see her as someone to relate compared to super rich former Chancellor, Rishi Sunak despite her shift in political positions over the years.
Liz Truss has promised to cut taxes and deal with the rising cost of living crisis that is now becoming an emergency in the country with millions facing poverty due to the rising energy bills.
