Marines in curry favour for charity

A group of Royal Marines are taking over a restaurant kitchen to help raise money for charity.

The Marine cooks from 40 Commando Royal Marines are manning the kitchens at the Curry Lounge in Nottingham to cook a three-course Indian meal.

The dinner, set to take place on Thursday night, is dubbed An Evening with the Heroes, and aims to raise money for the Royal Marines Benevolent Fund.

The Marines, who returned from Afghanistan in November, swapped ration packs for spices and clay ovens to learn exactly how to cook a traditional curry.

The group of six marine chefs are spending several days training with owner and chef Arfan Razak and his team ready for the evening.

Mr Razak said the idea stemmed from when he met a Royal Marine dining at his restaurant last May, who arranged to have his stag party there. But weeks before, the event had to be cancelled when he was killed in action.

“It brings the story you see on the news right home, it becomes personal,” he said.

After that he started helping at fundraising events for the Armed Forces, volunteering to cater at them, which culminated in him catering for for 700 Commandoes from 40 Commando Royal Marines at their base in Taunton, Somerset, on their return from Afghanistan.

“It was great and I was just so impressed with their attitude and outlook on life,” he said. “They were asking questions and wanted to learn more, so we suggested they come up and spend some time with us to learn more, and that’s what we’ve done.”

The six Marines are learning how to make curries, starters and traditional naan breads, and will show off their new-found skills to nearly 100 guests including local dignitaries and sporting celebrities. Diners are being invited to donate money to the Royal Marines Benevolent Fund, which helps people who are serving or have served in the Royal Marines, or their dependants.
