Police have been given an extra 12 hours to hold a man being questioned in connection with the murder of mother-to-be Nikitta Grender.
Murder hunt detectives arrested a 26-year-old man on Wednesday in connection with the violent killing.
The heavily pregnant teenager, 19, was found dead in her burnt-out flat in Broadmean Park, Liswerry, Newport, South Wales, on February 5.
What appeared to be a tragic death rapidly turned into a murder investigation when police revealed she had been stabbed twice.
Gwent Police confirmed that they have been granted an extra 12 hours to hold the man they are questioning.
The murder suspect was named locally today as Carl Whant, 26, who lives on Newport’s Bettws estate, several miles from the killing.
The father-of-one is second cousin of Miss Grender’s boyfriend Ryan Mayes, 18, and known to be a close friend.
Mr Mayes is listed on Whant’s Facebook page as a friend. The photographic link to his page is a poignant image of the teenager and Miss Grender kissing.
Whant is understood to be a former Welsh Guard who works as a bouncer at nightclubs across Newport.
His arrest followed confirmation by police that they had recovered two knives in their search for the murder weapon. Both have been sent for forensic examination.
