Nina Simone’s estate has slammed actress Zoe Saldana following the release of a trailer of a new movie about the singer’s life.
Zoe, 37, shared a quote by Nina after the release but was hit by angry backlash on Twitter from the singer’s estate, who called the film “heartbreaking”.
Zoe tweeted: “I’ll tell you what freedom is to me – no fear… I mean really, no fear.”
Nina’s official Twitter feed replied: “Cool story but please take Nina’s name out your mouth. For the rest of your life.”
Appearing to respond to the new film, her estate tweeted: “Hopefully people begin to understand this is painful.
Gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, nauseating, soul-crushing. It shall pass, but for now…”
Videos of Nina singing That Blackness and Go To Hell were tweeted out in the same attack by Nina’s family, as well as one of American singer and actress India Arie performing a cover of Come Ye.
The Facebook page of the Feelin’ Good singer shared a post asking fans to host listening parties on the film’s release date of April 22.
“We can use this date as another opportunity to celebrate Nina’s life and music. Let’s create a positive from a negative by coming together and acknowledging the authentic Nina Simone,” it read.
