A nursery assistant is due to appear in court accused of raping a child at his workplace.
Paul Wilson, 20, was arrested at his home in Nechells, Birmingham, in the early hours of Wednesday and charged by police on Thursday evening.
An investigation into suspected child abuse at Little Stars Nursery was launched by West Midlands Police following the seizure of a computer from Wilson’s home. He had been working there for 18 months.
Jayne Salt, head of the Crown Prosecution Service West Midlands complex casework unit, said: “Having carefully examined all of the available information which was submitted to us by the police, we have decided that there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to charge Paul Wilson with two counts of rape in relation to an investigation into the Little Stars Nursery in Nechells, Birmingham.
“He faces two charges of oral rape of a child under 13 years, namely two or three years, on dates between January 1 2009 and July 30 2010.”
Superintendent Matt Ward of West Midlands Police said there is no evidence of other children being abused at the nursery in Nechells Park Road, which has been temporarily closed.
He said he has spoken to parents of children at Little Stars Nursery, who were “very angry and very shocked” to hear of the arrest, and families of children who previously attended were being contacted.
Wilson is to appear at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court, where an application to remand him in custody will be made.
A telephone line offering advice and support to parents and guardians has been set up. The number is 0121 675 4806.
