The King’s Speech writer David Seidler has won an Oscar at the 83rd Academy Awards.
Seidler picked up the award for best original screenplay for the film about the British monarchy.
He said: “My father always said to me I would be a late bloomer. I believe I’m the oldest person to win this award.”
The awards had opened with a montage showing hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway in scenes from this year’s Best Picture nominations.
Veteran actor Kirk Douglas came on stage to a standing ovation to present the Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Helena Bonham Carter, who played Queen Elizabeth in The King’s Speech, lost out to Melissa Leo for The Fighter.
Legally Blonde star Reese Witherspoon presented the Best Supporting Actor award to Christian Bale for The Fighter. Welsh-born Bale said: “B****y hell. What a room full of talented, inspirational people and what am I doing in the midst of you?”
Tom Hanks presented the first award of the night, for Art Direction, to the team behind Alice In Wonderland. Sci-fi thriller Inception picked up the Cinematography award.
Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short Film awards went to Toy Story 3 and The Lost Thing respectively.
West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin picked up the Best Adapted Screenplay award for his work on the Facebook film The Social Network. Russell Brand and Helen Mirren presented the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar to the Danish film In A Better World.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won the Best Original Score Oscar for The Social Network.
