Tyler Perry has dominated the shortlist for the NAACP’s annual Image Awards, notching up 19 nominations.
The writer, actor and director earned the highest number of nods for the awards, which honour diversity in the arts, including best director for For Colored Girls and best screenplay for Why Did I Get Married Too?
Among the best actress nominations are Janet Jackson for Why Did I Get Married Too, Halle Berry for Frankie & Alice and Queen Latifah for Just Wright.
Will Smith’s son Jaden and Denzel Washington, who starred in the post-apocalyptic tale The Book of Eli, are among the stars up for best actor.
Meanwhile, The Losers star Jill Scott will compete in the best supporting actress category with For Colored Girls actresses Anika Noni Rose, Kimberly Elise, Phylicia Rashad and Whoopi Goldberg.
Best supporting actor nominees include Don Cheadle for Brooklyn’s Finest, Justin Timberlake for the box office hit The Social Network and Samuel L. Jackson for his performance in Mother and Child.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People’s Image Awards will be presented on March 4.
