Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has admitted that “trust has been broken” in the country’s high-speed rail network following the deadly collision near Urda, Toledo, which killed at least 69 people

Speaking to the media, Sánchez remarked that it is “unacceptable” for a country with an advanced high-speed rail system like Spain’s to suffer two major fatal rail disasters in a single year, following a previous crash near Adamuz in January that killed 46 people.

Sanchez also promised that his government would not merely investigate the technical causes of the accident, but would tirelessly to “put forward solutions to further strengthen the high-speed rail system” and ensure such a disaster never happens again.

Arriving at the crash site shortly after the incident, Sánchez expressed that “the whole of Spain is grieving,” adding that “lives have been shattered, families have been torn apart, the pain is immense”. He also confirmed that victims from up to 27 different nationalities are among those who died in the collision
