SIX OF THE BEST GHOULISH GADGETS
By Peter Jenkinson
It’s that trick-or-treat time of year. Peter Jenkinson rounds up six of the best ghoulish gadgets for your demonic delight
It is a shame that Halloween happens to fall on a school night this year.
But there will, of course, still be plenty of spook-tacular events occurring across the country and the most committed trick-or-treaters will not be put off by the fact it is a Sunday.
So this weekend, carve out a pumpkin and add one of our ghoulish gadgets to your scare tactics to stand out from the substandard costume crowd.
Vamp it up – Speciality Fangs – £7.99 from www.iwantoneofthose.com
Now normal pop-in-the-mouth vampire fangs make it impossible to offer the illusion that the full moon has caused your neck biting fangs to sprout, but not with this set. Pop them in, mould them to your mouth and, when the opportune moment arrives, give the tongue bar a flick and your ghoulish gnashers will appear.
Upstairs Scare – Blood Bath Shower Curtain – £11.99 from www.iwantoneofthose.com
The original Psycho film may have been released a few decades ago but until now the merchandise to accompany the film has been hard to come by. Stick this shower curtain up in your bathroom and delight as visitors to your abode return from a visit at a quicker pace and with slightly less colour in their faces.
Add Effect – Sound Machine – £8.99 – from www.firebox.com
Try as you may to make your own wolf howling noises at the moon, it’ll often sound no better than the after-effect of you getting your finger trapped in a drawer. Add realistic ambience to your Halloween celebrations with this superbly childish sound machine. The 16 sounds, which include a scream and an owl and crow caw, can make those hairs on the back of your neck stand to attention.
Twisted Treats – A Zombie Ate My Cupcake – £5.60 from www.amazon.co.uk
This fabulous read by baker and graphic designer Lily Vanilli isn’t just for Halloween, although it’s the perfect excuse to buy the book. Packed with fantastic illustrations, it contains 25 bizarre cupcake creations. From morbid meringue bones and marzipan beetles to cherry blood and guts, it’s a far cry from pink-iced fairy cakes but equally delicious.
Wizards Weapon – Kandela Magic Wand – £29.99 from www.rivieratrading.co.uk
There is something ever so Hogwarts-esque about wax-based room illuminators, so it was surely only a matter of time before some boffins created one that’s wand activated. The candle flickers as you may expect but inside are a couple of LEDs offering a superb illusion and this abracadabra device is controlled by swishing your wand around – prepare to wow your guests.
Dem Bones – Skelly Bones – £17.95 from www.firebox.com
If one or more pieces from your original block-stacking game is missing it may be time to invest in a new variation of the tense tower-based favourite. Instead of standard rectangular bricks, this one is made up of bones with a skull balancing at the top. Build the tower and then begin to remove the pieces and replace them at the top in the usual manner, using only one hand of course. Add the skull for another devious dimension to the game play.
