Microsoft has announced the retiring of the online messaging and calling service, Skype in May.
Skype was launched in 2003 and was acquired by eBay and then later bought by Microsoft in 2011 for $8.5 Billion.
According to the US Tech giant, this move is to allow it focus on its modern online communications platform like Teams which offers online meeting tools and messaging features.
Skype user numbers of online video calls have been dwindling in the recent years compared to what it was from 2000s. Most recent data in February 2023, showed user numbers of 36 million people daily which is way lower than when at it’s peak when it was one of the most popular online video in the 2000s to 2010s.
Microsoft latest online collaboration service, Teams particularly gained popularity during the remote home working period of the global pandemic.
Microsoft said that Skype will shut down finally on May 5th and it will give Skype users the option to move to Teams for free, as well as the opportunity to export their Skype data.
