Someone has won $430 MILLION in a US lottery

Must read

Someone, somewhere, is holding on to the sole winning Powerball lottery ticket that was sold in New Jersey and is worth an eye-popping US$430 million dollars (€377m).

Only one ticket matched all six numbers in Saturday night’s draw, said Powerball spokeswoman Kelly Cripe.

The winning numbers were 05, 25, 26, 44, 66 and the Powerball number was 09.

Ms Kripe said the exact location of where the winning ticket was sold was not immediately known and would probably be disclosed later by New Jersey Lottery bosses.

Saturday’s jackpot had climbed to US$429.6m, making the prize the largest since a record US$1.6bn (€1.4bn) payout in January that prompted some to wait in hours-long lines outside lottery sellers.

But unlike Saturday night’s draw, that jackpot was shared by three winning tickets.

Only one winning ticket will claim Saturday night’s prize, though it was not immediately known if that ticket was held by one or more people.

Ms Kripe said a winner or co-winners electing a one-time cash payout would receive US$284.1m.

It is not the first time Powerball luck has struck in New Jersey.

In 2013, a sole ticket claimed a US$383m Powerball jackpot.

Seven tickets from Saturday night’s draw matched five numbers and claimed $1m, including three in New York, two in Illinois and one each in California and Virginia.

Powerball is played in 44 states plus Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

The odds of winning are one in 292.2 million.
