Spielberg to make WikiLeaks movie?

Steven Spielberg has secured the rights to a book about WikiLeaks

Steven Spielberg is said to be eyeing up WikiLeaks: The Movie after buying the screen rights to a book on the subject.

The four-time Oscar-winning filmmaker secured the rights to WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War On Secrecy, written by Guardian journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding, about the WikiLeaks founder’s life and times.

“It’s Woodward and Bernstein meets Stieg Larsson meets Jason Bourne – plus the odd moment of sheer farce and, in Julian Assange, a compelling character who goes beyond what any Hollywood scriptwriter would dare to invent,” said Guardian News & Media editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger.

The big-screen adaptation is expected to be backed by DreamWorks, the studio founded in 1994 by Steven, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen, and no details about director, scriptwriter or cast have been revealed yet.

Website creator Assange is currently fighting an extradition order to Sweden to face sexual abuse accusations.
