Lee’s new film will be the first original movie by Amazon Studios’ new division.
The film, with the working title Chi-Raq, stars Wesley Snipes, Jennifer Hudson, Nick Cannon and Teyonah Parris.
Samuel L Jackson, Angela Bassett and John Cusack also have roles, alongside DB Sweeney, Harry Lennix and Steve Harris.
Chi-Raq, which was shot entirely in Chicago, wrapped last week.
Directed by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker, it was also co-written by Spike and Kevin Willmott and focuses on violence in inner-city Chicago.
“I’m honoured to be part of the film that will launch Amazon Studios and to tell a story that is so important. Please don’t be fooled by the title of Chi-Raq, this new Spike Lee joint will be something very special. We have assembled a stellar cast,” Spike said.
Amazon Studios’ Ted Hope added: “We couldn’t have come up with a better film to launch our division in every which way. Chi-Raq makes no apologies and dares to shock. Spike Lee is one of the most distinct and visionary filmmakers of our time.”
Amazon Original Movies, announced in January, was formed to produce and acquire original movies for theatrical release as well as distribution to its Amazon Prime members.
