England’s bid to host the 2018 World Cup has gained widespread celebrity support.

Stars from the music industry have backed the bid, including ex-Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, Kasabian frontman Serge Pizzorno and X Factor judge Simon Cowell.

Actors Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Rupert Grint have also added their backing as the Fifa executive committee vote approaches.

Gallagher said: “The buzz the nation would create if we were to host the World Cup in 2018 would be incredible.”

Cowell said a successful bid would “unite the whole country”, while Pizzorno believes a World Cup in England “would create a huge wave of passion”.

According to Fry, the enthusiasm for football is a key reason why the competition should be held in England.

“No other country in the world can match our infatuation for the game and this is the reason I believe England would be an ideal host for the 2018 World Cup,” he said.

Sheen said England would “produce the most memorable of tournaments”, while Harry Potter star Grint urged “the entire nation to back the bid”.
