Tour boat crew held over sinking

Stuart McCormick died in Halong Bay, Vietnam, when a tourist boat sank

The captain, crew and owner of a Vietnamese tour boat have been detained for questioning two days after 11 foreign tourists, including a Briton, and their Vietnamese guide drowned when the vessel sank as they slept.

Stuart McCormick, 30, from Irvine, Ayrshire, died when the boat sank in Vietnam’s famed tourist spot Ha Long Bay on Thursday.

Quang Ninh police spokesman Le Thanh Binh said the director of Truong Hai Company, the boat captain and five crew members had been detained.

Vu Van Thin, chief administrator of Quang Ninh province, said the government would offer £610 to each of the foreign victims’ families and £308 to the nine survivors.

It was unclear if additional compensation would be provided from an insurance company.

The bodies of the foreign victims – from nine countries – remain at hospitals in Ha Long Bay.
