Dr Who has been named as British children’s top choice for a lollipop person to help them cross the road, according to a survey.

More than a quarter (27%) said they would like to be helped by the time-travelling doctor, who saw off close competition from Cheryl Cole (21%).

Boy band JLS and footballer David Beckham came third on 12%.

The survey of 3,000 children aged seven to 14 was released at the start of National Road Safety Week.

Brendan Devine, managing director of Kwik Fit Insurance, which commissioned the survey, said: “The competition is all about celebrating lollipop people and the work they do in keeping our young people safe as they cross the road, and it was interesting to see which famous face was the most popular choice for this important job.”

3,000 children aged seven to 14 were surveyed on behalf of Kwik Fit Insurance.
