Top chef Michel Roux has beaten comedian Ricky Gervais by a whisker to the title of Beard of Winter, according to the Beard Liberation Front (BLF), the informal network of beard wearers.
Roux’s beard just says “gravitas”, while Gervais’s beard is high impact but not universally regarded in a positive sense, said BLF organiser Keith Flett.
The award is the first of four seasonal ones that go to make up the list for the Beard of the Year, which will be announced in December. Nominations come from BLF supporters.
The winter list traditionally features bushy organic beards designed to cope with winter weather as well as those whose beard has been in the public eye over the festive season.
The shortlist included footballer David Beckham, actor Brian Blessed, musician Richard Thompson and actor Ricky Tomlinson.
